Indigenous language

Agency Reporter

THE Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Mr. Edem Duke, has called on Nigerian youths to imbibe the act of speaking their indigenous languages for national pride and identity.

Duke gave the advice on Monday at the opening ceremony of indigenous language programme organised by the National Institute of Cultural Orientation in Abuja.

He observed that youths preferred the foreign languages and the few that speak the indigenous language did so without the original accent.

"The indigenous languages which used to be a unifying force and a major source of identity is fast eroding among our youths that have lost their cultural values.

"The society is now being driven by mechanical solidarity due to infiltration of western culture which has polarised our society and has led to loss of cultural identity,'' he said.
