Looking FOR Sponsorship and Teachers in Edo Language 2014

Edo language has been recognized since colonial times and Nigerian independence as a subject worthy of study in schools such as the University of Lagos and used for mass communication by Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation through Radio Nigeria, Ibadan. But today, Edo language is no longer taught at University of Lagos. Only College of Education, Ekiadolor presently teaches Edo language. Occasionally a handful of students register for Edo language as a part of their Linguistic degree course at University of Benin. Edo language is taught only in a few schools in Edo state because of the inadequate number of teachers.

Edo language is critical to our being and existence and defines our identity as a people and culture. As inheritors and users of this beautiful Edo language, which facilitated the development of a rich art and cultural heritage, it is our responsibility therefore to preserve, promote and develop the language and pass it on to subsequent generations. To this end, Umagbae World Organization inaugurated a scholarship program in 2010 to assist and encourage the training of Edo Language teachers at College of Education, Ekiadolor, Edo state. This program funded the cost tuition and textbooks of … students. But this number is insignificant compared to the needs for specialist language teachers in the numerous public and private schools in Edo State.

It is in response to this urgent need that Umagbae made the scholarship scheme a permanent ongoing project to produce more teachers to fill available spaces in schools and save our language from extinction. Umagbae is conscious of the existence of other stakeholders who can also contribute to accomplishing this task and is hereby appealing to all Edo sons and daughters as well as friends and well wishers of Edo people to support this noble cause by donating generously towards this scholarship scheme. Donations to the general fund and donation for single or more students are welcomed.

All donations will be acknowledged in writing and publications of Umagbae.
