BENIN CITY – The need for all especially Edo indigenes to be involved in the sustenance, propagation and extensive use of the Edo language has been stressed.
This formed the theme of discussion at a one day workshop held at the University of Benin, Ekehuan Campus by the Joint Committee on Edo Language Development (JOCELD) in collaboration with the university of Benin (Linguistic Department) and the Institute of Benin Students.
Declaring the occasion open, the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Barrister Ekpenisi Omorotionmwan who was represented by the Deputy Director of the Ministry, Mr. Ehon G. I. called on participants to cherish Edo Language and teach their children and wards to speak the language effectively.
Barrister Omorotionmwan stated that language promotes culture, stressing that if the culture of the people of Benin must be promoted and sustained, parents should learn to always speak and teach their children and wards.
In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Benin, Professor Godwin Oshodin represented by the former Head of Department of Education and Dean, Student Affairs, Professor B. E. Omozuwa promised that the institute for Benin studies would be tremendously enhanced in his time.
He advised the organizers not to relent in their crusade to give Edo Language prominence in the scheme of things.
In a key note address, the Chairman, Joint Committee on Edo Language Development (JOCELD) Mr. Aikhoriogie Obobaifo stated that the workshop is designed to afford all Edo Language users skill enhancement and problem solving opportunity.
The JOCELD chairman stated that Edo Language was rated as number four in Nigeria under ‘Global Travel and Holiday Chart’ in 1984 but has been so relegated to the extent that it has lost any position of recognition I the country.
Earlier, the Chief Host of the ceremony, Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom, chromited the history of the Benin in relation to Edo Language and called on the Benins to emulate the Japanese ad Yorubas in the use of native language.
He noted that the native language could be used to save someone from dangerous situation.
Dignitaries who raced the occasion include Hon. Josef Omorotionmwan, Chairman, Board of Directors, Bendel Newspapers Company Limited, Prof Macdonald Idu, Vice-Chancellor, Benson Idahosa University represented by Dr. Akungbowa N. Amadasun, Dean, Faculty of Social and Management Studies.
