Former Nigerian goalkeeper Wilfred Agbonavbare has died after his battle with cancer.

Agbonavbare was critically ill and admitted in a hospital in Florida, USA in a bid to combat the ailment.

However he passed away early on Tuesday morning at the hospital in Alcalá.

His former Spanish club, Rayo Vallecano raised 21,106.90 Euros which they handed out to his family, believed to have helped facilitated the travel arrangements for his three sons to see him at his dying bed.

"The Rayo Vallecano family and fans are in mourning. Cancer has taken Wilfred away from us this morning", the club said on their official Twitter account.

He was a member of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 African Nations Cup title in Tunisia.

w him was an icon. He represented Nigeria when he was in Secondry School. He was the goal keeper for Bendel Academicals, and he was the safe hands for the New Nigeria Bank of Benin before going professional in spain.
Sigalo was a crowd puller. For those of us who grew up in Benin and Warri,we cannot forget the Principal Cup and the Governor’s Cup Championships. Games against Western Boys High School, Hussey College or Urhobo College were always a delight to watch. Edokplo Grammer School playing against Western Boys High School then was like Chelsea Playing Arsenal. Sigalo was always the difference maker. His magnetic saves always leave spectators awed.
Sigalo was a class act. Humble and amiable. With his international stature then he never fails to acknowledge you whenever we call him by his appellation. If it was now it will be selfies upon slefies of Sigalo all over social media.
Wilfred died this morning, January 27, 2015 in far away Spain of cancer.A disease that also killed his wife few years back. Death can be so cruel.
Live on Wilfred Agbonanvare AKA Sigalo. May Your Soul Rest in Peace and May the Good Lord grant your family especially your three young children the fortitude to bear the loss. AMEN

Few deaths have touched me the way the death of Wlfred Agbonnavare has. This is painfully so because I have memories of him as a goalkeeper for Edokplolo Grammar School in Benin. Every single game for Wilfred was memorable to the fans and Spectators. As a young lad growing up in Benin, the name “Sigalo” was synonymous with excellent goalkeeping. It will not be out of place to hear spectators shout “Sigalooooo!” anytime a goalkeeper made a wonderful catch. Sigalo as we know him was an icon. He represented Nigeria when he was in Secondry School. He was the goal keeper for Bendel Academicals, and he was the safe hands for the New Nigeria Bank of Benin before going professional in spain.
