A former Defense Minister and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State General Godwin Abbe, yesterday, described the party’s decision to challenge the result of the just concluded governorship election in the state as unpopular.
The PDP chieftain, who spoke during an interview on the Independent Television, Benin City, admonished the candidate of his party, General Charles Airhiavbere, to accept the outcome of the election and support Governor Adams Oshiomhole in providing dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.
Abbe, who described the election as one of the most credible in the history of the country, urged his party members to work towards future elections by ensuring unity in the PDP.
The former minister, speaking on telephone from the United States, where, according to him, he is receiving medical check up, stated: “I was told my party had gone to court to challenge the governorship election. You see, I just want to advise that my brother Charles Airhiavbere should join hands with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to build our state, while I also advise him to start working towards 2016.
“If anybody advises my party and Charles about the petition to tribunal, it is uncalled for, because the election has been adjudged the fairest and freest in recent times in this country”.
In a related development, the member representing Orhiomwon II constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Patrick Aisowieren, also advised the PDP candidate in the Edo gubernatorial poll to join hands with the Action Congress of Nigeria and Oshiomhole in building a new state.

PDP Challenges Oshiomhole's Election Victory In Court
Sat, 04/08/2012 -
... Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the July 14 Edo Governorship election, has filed a petition at the Election Petitions Tribunal challenging the victory of Gov. Adams Oshiomole of ACN.
Mrs Josephine Aliyu, the Secretary of the tribunal, said Airhiavbere filed the petition on Aug. 2, through Sunday Agwinede and four other counsel.
The first and second petitioners, Airhiavbere and PDP, are challenging Oshiomhole, and five others – Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), INEC, Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and the State Governorship Returning Officer.
The petitioners claimed that the ‘purported election’ was invalid due to corrupt practices and non-compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act 2010 (as Amended).
They alleged intimidation and harassment of voters, depriving them from exercising their franchise and constitutional rights in 11 local government areas of the state.
The petitioners further claimed that there was no link between Oshiomhole and the academic qualification he presented.
They further claimed that INEC invalidly returned Oshiomhole as duly elected in spite of the fact that the election was not concluded in compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act 2012.
The petitioners said that the Edo Election returning officer wrongfully proceeded to declare Oshiomhole winner of the election by issuing him Form EC8E on July 15.
They further claimed that the Edo REC subsequently and wrongfully issued Oshiomhole a certificate of return on behalf of INEC.
They claimed that Oshiomhole, who was returned as the winner of the election, was not qualified to contest the election of the office of the governor of Edo. (NAN)

This is a very good advice. An advice worth taking
Our son General Charles Airhiabere should be a good sportsman.
He should do things and say words that can earn him sympathy win him love and respect rather than hatred.
He was in Benin City during the ections and saw the action of Edo people.
Tell the general 'ede no mare gbe o bun se, odaro agbon rie'
You have been spending your money and the lawyers will alway say they can do the impossible to make you spend more money unnecessarily.
Instead use your mney to open a small factory in Evboneka your village near Nifor or go to Iguehena village in Uhunmwonde and open a small business and employ 50 Benin Edo and you will see your fortunes in Edo State will change.
Have the intellectuals in your party not analysed critically the outcome of the elections to you and your party? If they have not then there must be serious deficiency in the party.
I wish you well
EDO 2012: AIRHIAVBERE'S LAWSUIT DUMB; EDO GUBER ELECTION WAS A POPULARITY CONTEST, NOT AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE. ITS DUMB FOR GENERAL AIRIAVBERE TO GO TO COURT. IF TRUELY OSHIOMHOLE WAS NOT QUALIFIED TO CONTEST, BECAUSE YOU WAITED TILL AFTER THE ELECTION BEFORE YOU GO TO COURT, YOU HAVE NO CASE. IF YOU ARE AWARE THAT I'M BUILDING A HOUSE IN YOUR PIECE OF LAND AND YOU FAIL STOP ME, THAT LAND AUTOMATICALLY BECOMES MINE. THE ONUS TO PROVE THAT OSHIOMHOLE DO NOT HAVE THE ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION LIES ON GEN. AIRHIAVBERE NOT OSHIOMHOLE. EDO GUBERNATORAL ELECTION WAS NOT AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE, IT WAS A POPULARITY CONTEST. MINORITY DO NOT RULE OVER MAJORITY IN A DEMOCRACY. PDP SHOULD THINK NEXT ELECTION, EDO 2012 GOVERNOR ELECTION HAS PAST, ITS A DONE DEAL.
