Paranoia is rampant across the south, and ‘church’ and beliefs in ‘juju’ in Nigeria

Paranoia is rampant across the south, and ‘church’ and beliefs in ‘juju’ don’t make it easy since pastors and juju babalawos are always encouraging the most paranoid mindset in Nigerians against each other. Such mindset brings ‘customers’ for the pastor and juju priest but creates an atmosphere of hate and suspicion and lack of development in and amongst the people, including in how they relate to their very environment.

In the old days, villages wake early and compounds are swept and houses cleaned to start the new day. Today, people are too consumed with suspicion and paranoia to even begin to think of collaborating to clean and maintain their environs. People just live near an open gutter and don’t even care to form a neighborhood association to keep their environs clean.

Nor do people share knowledge and skills, always seeing the next person as potential enemy.

After social media, only thoughts of suspicion, enemies, “holy ghost fire IJN“ and so on full the average person head. Then, many come to social media to confirm their paranoia.

Everyone is always praying against the other parson, suspecting friends and family and neighbours, wishing ill against coworkers and mere acquaintances, always ‘praying’ and ’IJN’-ing themselves against phantom ‘principalities’.

In life, not everyone is ‘out to take your glory’. Competition exists and you need to face this fact squarely.

If you have your own interest at heart, imagine too that other people also have their very own interest at heart. Also, Life is about giving too. AND friendship is rare. But giving is just as good as taking. We shouldn’t always be expecting to be taking, or always the one giving.

Going around suspecting your friends and family and neighbours is madness. It makes life very hard. The pastor and juju cultist want you in this state so you can keep giving them money.

The other thing is aside from your own interests as individuals, there must exist interest of the LARGER PUBLIC, COMMUNAL GOOD. Not everything is always about the individual and his or her drive to ‘become success “no matter what”’!

Let’s DEVELOP TRUST. Societies and communities with trust amongst the people are already far ahead in reducing unnecessary suffering amongst themselves. This non-stop suspicion that pastors and juju priests encourage is why so much hardship exists.

Let’s try and be kind to each other. When we admire something in someone that makes us want to be their friend, let’s reach out with an open heart.

Let’s be Curious, let’s Develop warm, caring friendship where we can be vulnerable and yet safe, where we can collaborate and be supportive.
